Following on the back of the National Squad training camp the Sydney event was supported by many of the big guns from interstate. The Mid Week event ran on Thursday which had everyone dashing all over the SIEC venue which is such a sprawling place the riders and the spectators needed a day off on Friday to apply more band aids to the blisters sustained from the kilometres covered!
Tim Boland winning the 2 star seems to be a common occurrence, Murray Lamperd gave it a red hot go to chase him down with the fastest time cross country but Napoleon’s dressage was too big a lead over the field. Gemma Tinney rode Annapurna in the 1 star which in itself is not a startling revelation but winning the 2 star at the weekend certainly got everyone’s attention!
The weekend event saw a well-supported field of 3 star competitors with 23 horses in the class. Good ol Murphy’s Law or whatever it is that makes eventing the sport of “it aint over till ….” You get the drift! Prue Barrett and her very favourite Sandhills Special went out cross country CRUISING and after an absolute stellar dressage test it certainly looked like Prue and Special were taking home the rug! Alas the mare lost her footing on take-off at the last fence, unbelievable!! To all that saw the mare commented “effortless” “a walk in the park”! Tim Boland and Napoleon stepping up to 3 star didn’t quite go to plan either, that old adage of roosters and feather dusters! So off we went to the show jumping with Stuart Tinney and Carlchen in the lead from Megan Jones and Kirby Park Impress, word came over the radio that Stuart had withdrawn Carlchen before the show jumping due to a minor injury. Kirby Park Impress show jumped like a winner that’s for sure. Candy finished off 2015 motoring around most every 2 star without really living up to her name but here at at Sydney both the mare and Megan shone.
Note worth at Sydney was the junior riders stepping up to the ranks of big kids, Jordyn Faint and Olivia Inglis having their first 2 star and Lizard Crosato smashing the 3 star with Mohawk, well done guys!
